Powder vs Adhesive film
Powder is the standard DTF method. Adhesive film skips the shaker but costs more per print and limits fabric choice.
| Powder | Adhesive film | |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Shaker + oven required | No shaker |
| Cost per A3 | $0.15–$0.30 powder | $0.40–$0.80 film |
| Hand feel | Soft after pressing | Slightly stiffer |
| Fabric range | Wide | Narrower |
| Best for | Volume production | Tiny shops with no space |
Choose Powder if
You print more than a few shirts a week.
Choose Adhesive film if
You have no room for a shaker and print occasionally.
The short answer
Powder is cheaper at any real volume. Adhesive film is a space compromise, not a cost saving.

Other comparisons
DTF vs Sublimation
Sublimation only bonds to polyester. DTF bonds to cotton, blends and dark fabrics — which is why most t-shirt shops start with DTF.
DTF vs HTV (heat transfer vinyl)
HTV is faster for one-color names and numbers. DTF wins on full-color photos, gradients and fabric range.
DTF vs DTG (direct to garment)
DTG prints directly onto the shirt and feels like nothing. DTF prints on film first, which makes it cheaper to start and more forgiving on blends.
DTF vs Screen printing
Screen printing is cheapest per unit above ~100 pieces. DTF is cheaper below that because there is no screen setup.
