DTF vs Screen printing
Screen printing is cheapest per unit above ~100 pieces. DTF is cheaper below that because there is no screen setup.
| DTF | Screen printing | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup cost per design | $0 | $25–$60 per screen |
| Break-even | — | Around 50–100 units |
| Colors | Unlimited, no extra cost | Each color = one screen |
| Turnaround for 20 shirts | Same day | 1–3 days |
| Cost at 500 units | $1.50–$3.00 each | $0.80–$1.50 each |
| Best for | 1–100 units, multi-color | 100+ units, 1–3 colors |
Choose DTF if
Orders under 100 units, or designs with 4+ colors.
Choose Screen printing if
Repeat orders over 100 units with 1–3 spot colors.
The short answer
Most growing shops run DTF for small and rush orders, and outsource or add screen printing for large runs.

Other comparisons
DTF vs Sublimation
Sublimation only bonds to polyester. DTF bonds to cotton, blends and dark fabrics — which is why most t-shirt shops start with DTF.
DTF vs HTV (heat transfer vinyl)
HTV is faster for one-color names and numbers. DTF wins on full-color photos, gradients and fabric range.
DTF vs DTG (direct to garment)
DTG prints directly onto the shirt and feels like nothing. DTF prints on film first, which makes it cheaper to start and more forgiving on blends.
UV DTF vs DTF (powder)
UV DTF is a printed sticker you apply cold. DTF needs powder and heat. UV DTF is for hard goods, DTF is for fabric.
