DTF on Polyester

DTF Printing on Polyester

Polyester is heat-sensitive and can dye-migrate. DTF works at lower temperature than vinyl, which reduces shrinkage and shine.

Substrates: 100% polyester, poly spandex, sports mesh

Settings that work

Temperature130–140 °C
Press time8–12 seconds
PressureLight-medium, 3–4 bar
PeelCold peel
Wash careInside out, cold, 20–25 washes

Settings are a starting point, not gospel. Film batches, ink lots and press calibration all shift the ideal number — always pull-test a sample before a paid run.

What goes wrong, and how to fix it

ProblemFix
Dye migration (color bleeds through)Polyester dye sublimates at high heat. Drop to 130 °C and use a dye-blocking underlayer for red and navy garments.
Fabric melts or glazesAbove 150 °C poly scorches. Stay at 130–140 °C and test on a scrap.
Transfer slides during pressSlippery fabric. Pre-press 3 seconds and pin the transfer with heat tape.

Good fit

  • Sports jerseys
  • Polyester work shirts
  • Cheap blanks where sublimation is not available

Where it fails

  • Coated polyester (water-repellent)
  • Poly with high spandex content above 20%

What to buy for polyester

Weekly volumeMachine classWhy
Under 20 shirts a weekA4 or A3 desktop + heat pressA4 covers logos and kids sizes; A3 adds full adult backs. Both run on a normal desk.
20–60 shirts a weekA3 (33 cm) + shaker + ovenThis is the volume where hand powdering becomes the bottleneck, not the printer.
60+ shirts a week60 cm dual head + 60 cm ovenGang sheets and a matched oven width. Two heads cut print time roughly in half.

Volume bands assume one operator and a standard 38 × 38 cm press. Verify with a sample before committing to a machine size.
